Introducing color mixing to 5 year olds is always a fun yet challenging process. Proper brush technique: Mr. Paintbrush is the super hero of the art room, he sweeps away Mr. Blob! Use him like a broom. Hold it like a pencil. Mr. Paintbrush doesn’t like his hair messed up. No Sally, we don’t paint on our hands. When you want to change colors, give Mr. Paintbrush a bath. No, Michael! Sweep the paint, we’re not coloring with Mr. Paintbrush….
But then the mixing comes… and the delighted sounds when they find out that primary colors make new colors!
So the kinders painted primary colors on a small sheet of paper one week. Then the next week they came back and mixed them and painted the secondary colors. The week following that they used shape templates I’d made to trace on the back of their papers and cut them out. They then glued them down onto a square sheet of black paper and used a construction paper crayon for the tail and a Sharpie for the eyes.
Skills: brush technique, color mixing, primary and secondary colors, cutting, gluing. PHEW!!!
